📰 News we're reading

1. Hundreds Of Cal State Long Beach Students Sent To Hotels After Dorm Delay: Report (patch.com) — Cal State Long Beach students assigned to the new La Playa residence hall are beginning the semester in nearby hotels because the $126.4 million dorm has not yet received occupancy clearance. The university is covering temporary lodging, shuttles, meals, and adding $200 in Beach Bucks while delaying housing charges until the Long Beach facility opens. Students may move in once inspections are complete, but no firm date is set.

2. California scientists build robot to look for great white sharks near beaches (texarkanagazette.com) — Long Beach–based shark researchers at Cal State Long Beach are testing a new semi‑autonomous "shark surveillance bot" they hope to deploy off Southern California beaches, including Long Beach Harbor, ahead of the 2028 Olympics. The craft uses acoustic tags, cameras, and potentially DNA sampling to track great white sharks and share real‑time information with lifeguards, aiming to improve public safety without stoking fear.

3. Many Guns Used in Crimes in Largest CA Cities Sold at Turner's Outdoorsman (kabc.com) — State data show that guns originally sold at Turner's Outdoorsman locations have later turned up as "crime guns" in several big California cities, including Long Beach. While the report doesn't claim the guns were sold illegally, it highlights how many firearms traced by law enforcement were first purchased at this popular chain between 2023 and 2025.

4. AEG Collaborates with Archer to Build L.A. Live Vertiport (labusinessjournal.com) — A new vertiport planned for L.A. Live is part of Archer Aviation's growing air-taxi network that includes Long Beach among several regional hubs ahead of the 2028 Olympics. Another key player is Long Beach-based Odys Aviation, which is developing longer-range aircraft, signaling that local companies could help shape how residents move around Southern California in coming years.
