Long Beach Wants Speed Cameras On Deadly Stretch Of PCH (patch.com) — Long Beach leaders are pushing for state approval to install two automated speed cameras along the city's deadliest eight-mile stretch of Pacific Coast Highway, where 39 people have died since 2020. A new bill from Sen. Lena Gonzalez would override state-route restrictions so these cameras can join 18 others already planned citywide, aiming to curb dangerous speeding and reduce the city's rising traffic fatalities.

2. Help clear thousands of pounds of trash from local beaches during California Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 19 (sigtrib.com) — Long Beach residents are invited to join California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, Sept. 19, when volunteers will clear trash from 10 local beaches and waterfront spots from Alamitos Bay to Rainbow Harbor. With free parking, provided supplies, and kid-friendly activities, the city and partners make it easy for families, neighbors, and community groups to help keep Long Beach's shoreline clean and healthy.

3. Día de los Muertos Festival returns after last year's cancellation (sigtrib.com) — Long Beach is bringing back its Día de los Muertos festival to Rainbow Lagoon on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 1 to 7 p.m., after last year's cancellation. Residents can expect performances, vendors, and a resource fair, and local nonprofits and businesses are invited to apply by Oct. 23 to participate.

4. CSULB unveils Pyramid renaming in $8.5 million sponsorship deal. Here's how they plan to spend the money (lbpost.com) — Long Beach State's iconic Pyramid has been renamed the LBS Financial Pyramid under an $8.5 million, 12-year sponsorship that's already funding lobby upgrades and future repairs. Most of the money will support athletic scholarships and rising program costs, while $850,000 is set aside to boost campus activities and student life for the wider Long Beach community.

5. Driver who ran down bicyclist in Long Beach shot to death by Border Patrol agents, authorities say (lbpost.com) — Long Beach police say a man suspected of intentionally killing a bicyclist in West Long Beach earlier this summer was later shot and killed by Border Patrol agents in Blythe after allegedly attacking them with a sword. Detectives connected the suspect, identified as Kenneth Richard Sok, to the Cowles Street crash that killed 51-year-old Gerardo Mejia, whose death was ruled a homicide.
