LONG BEACH, CA — Long Beach businesses can receive grants of up to $1,500 to install security cameras, alarms, floodlights and other security improvements under a new $400,000 city program.
The city launched its Safe & Secure Long Beach Grant Program Wednesday to help local businesses pay for upgrades intended to improve storefront safety and protect employees and customers. Chelsey Magallon, public affairs officer for the Long Beach Department of Economic Development & Opportunity, told Patch Thursday that businesses may receive grants of $750 or $1,500.
The amount awarded will be determined by factors including the size of the business, its total exposed exterior and the number of entrances and exits, Magallon said. The city anticipates the $400,000 available through the program could support more than 250 Long Beach businesses, depending on the amounts awarded, she said.
Eligible improvements include security cameras, floodlighting, alarm systems and other security upgrades, according to the city. Security fencing may also qualify on a case-by-case basis, provided it complies with applicable city codes and permitting requirements.
Funding will be provided as a reimbursement after eligible security improvements have been installed. To qualify, applicants must operate a publicly accessible storefront in Long Beach and hold an active city business license.
"In Long Beach, we believe that safe businesses mean safe neighborhoods," Mayor Rex Richardson said in announcing the program. "The Safe & Secure Program is a direct investment in the hardworking business owners who make our commercial corridors vibrant and welcoming."
The program is funded by a $350,000 allocation from the city's Redevelopment Agency as part of the City Council-approved fiscal year 2026 budget, along with an additional $50,000 contribution from Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn's office.
"Our local small businesses are part of the fabric of our neighborhoods, and when business owners feel unsafe, the whole community feels it," Hahn said. "Sometimes better lighting, security cameras or an alarm system can make a real difference."
Applications are now open and will be accepted until the available funding is exhausted.
