SR-91 Lane, Ramp Closures To Impact Long Beach Drivers This Week

LONG BEACH, CA — Drivers traveling on State Route 91 through Long Beach should prepare for overnight lane and ramp closures this week as crews continue work on a $34 million freeway rehabilitation project.

Closures begin Monday night and continue through Saturday morning along SR-91 between Vermont Avenue in Gardena and the Orange County line in Cerritos, according to a Caltrans traffic advisory.

The work will affect both directions of the freeway, with portions of SR-91 reduced to as few as two lanes overnight. Long Beach Boulevard ramps are also among those scheduled to close.

Long Beach Boulevard Ramps Affected

From Monday night through Friday morning, the westbound SR-91 on- and off-ramps at Long Beach Boulevard are scheduled to close from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for bridge demolition work.

The eastbound on- and off-ramps at Long Beach Boulevard may also close from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to Caltrans. Additional overnight work is scheduled Friday into Saturday morning.

Other ramps affected at various times during the week include Santa Fe Avenue, Cherry Avenue, Paramount Boulevard, Main Street, Avalon Boulevard, Atlantic Avenue, Downey Avenue and Carmenita Avenue. Caltrans said motorists should follow posted detours during ramp closures.

Overnight Lane Closures

From Monday night through Friday morning, Caltrans plans the following lane closures:

• Up to three eastbound lanes between Vermont Avenue and Interstate 710 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
• Up to three eastbound lanes between I-710 and Interstate 605 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
• Up to three eastbound lanes between I-605 and the Orange County line from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Up to three westbound lanes between Atlantic Avenue and Vermont Avenue from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Up to three westbound lanes between I-605 and Atlantic Avenue from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Up to two westbound lanes between the Orange County line and I-605 from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m.

A separate schedule of overnight lane and ramp closures is planned Friday night into Saturday morning. Caltrans said there may also be rolling full closures of freeway connectors and ramps while crews move between work areas. Work Part Of $34 Million Project

The closures are part of a $34 million rehabilitation project covering 14.7 miles of SR-91 between Vermont Avenue and the Orange County line.

The project includes replacing and upgrading roadside and overhead signs and lighting, replacing guardrails, restoring highway landscaping and making worker-safety improvements. Construction is expected to continue through summer 2029.

Caltrans said the closure schedule is subject to change because of weather or operational conditions. Drivers were advised to allow additional travel time and use caution around construction crews. Motorists can check current freeway conditions using Caltrans QuickMap.
