Police Seek Semi Driver In Fatal Long Beach Bicycle Hit-And-Run

A 68-year-old bicyclist died after being struck by a semi-truck trailer. Police confirmed to Patch that the driver fled.

LONG BEACH, CA — Police are searching for the driver of a semi-truck involved in a hit-and-run collision that killed a 68-year-old Long Beach bicyclist earlier this month, authorities confirmed to Patch Thursday.

The collision happened shortly after 11 p.m. Sept. 4 near West Pacific Coast Highway and Canal Avenue in West Long Beach.

The bicyclist was riding west on the south sidewalk of Pacific Coast Highway when a semi-truck pulling a trailer turned right out of a restaurant parking lot to travel east on PCH, according to police. The bicyclist tried to stop before the trailer struck him and knocked him to the ground, according to the Long Beach Post.

The man was taken to a hospital and died from his injuries the following day. Police said the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner notified the department of his death Sept. 10. Authorities have described the victim as a 68-year-old Long Beach resident but have not publicly released his name.

The semi-truck driver continued east on Pacific Coast Highway after the collision, according to the Long Beach Post. Asked by Patch Thursday whether the driver had remained at the scene, the Long Beach Police Department confirmed it was a hit-and-run.

LBPD also confirmed that detectives are still trying to find the driver. "We are working to identify the driver," the department told Patch.

Police did not provide Patch with a description of the semi-truck or trailer, saying detectives were actively investigating. MyNewsLA also reported Wednesday that the driver had not been identified and was being sought.

Investigators are examining speed as a possible contributing factor in the collision. Asked by Patch whether that referred to the semi-truck or the bicyclist, LBPD said that question remains under investigation.
