Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Woman In Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA — A woman died after a pickup truck struck her in a marked crosswalk Friday evening, and now police are asking for help finding the driver, who fled, Long Beach police said.

The collision happened about 7:20 p.m. at Baltic Avenue and Burnett Street. The woman was walking north when the driver of a southbound white pickup tried to turn east onto Burnett Street and struck her, police said.

"The preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian was walking in a marked crosswalk northbound on Baltic Avenue when she was struck by a white pickup truck travelling southbound Baltic Avenue attempting to make an eastbound turn onto Burnett Street," Long Beach Police said. "The driver fled eastbound on Burnett Street."

Long Beach Fire Department personnel took the woman to a hospital, where she died. Her name was being withheld pending notification of her family, and police did not release her approximate age.

A preliminary investigation found no indication that speed, distraction or impairment contributed to the collision, police said.
