LONG BEACH, CA — Huy "Henry" Nguyen widened his lead over Susana Gonzalez Edmond in the race for a seat on the Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees early Wednesday, as additional votes were tallied following Tuesday's general election.
Results from the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's Office, updated at 3:11 a.m. Wednesday, showed Nguyen with 14,901 votes, or 53.8%, compared with Edmond's 12,803 votes, or 46.2%.
Nguyen's lead in the Trustee Area 5 contest grew to 2,098 votes, up from 1,823 in Tuesday night's 10:04 p.m. update. His total increased by 2,569 votes between the two updates, while Edmond gained 2,294.
The race was Long Beach's principal local contest in the Nov. 3 election, after the city's mayoral and City Council elections were settled during the June primary. Although Nguyen maintained a lead of 7.6 percentage points, the results remained unofficial, with additional ballots still to be counted.
Nguyen, a school district administrator, and Edmond, an education consultant and businesswoman, are competing to succeed outgoing trustee Virginia Baxter on the five-member board overseeing Long Beach City College.
The board helps determine the college's financial and academic priorities, including its budget, educational programs, facilities and long-term development. Trustee Area 5 is one of five geographic districts represented on the board. Only voters residing within its boundaries participated in Tuesday's contest.
The winner will help guide the college as it continues addressing student enrollment, workforce development, campus improvements and financial planning. The county will continue counting outstanding ballots before certifying the November election results.
Tuesday's trustee election followed a June 2 primary in which Long Beach voters settled the city's mayoral, auditor and five City Council contests without the need for November runoffs.
Mayor Rex Richardson secured reelection with 57.4% of the vote, while City Auditor Laura Doud won another term with 70.5%. All five City Council seats on the ballot were also decided in June.
Mary Zendejas won reelection in District 1, Kristina Duggan in District 3, Megan Kerr in District 5, Vivian Malauulu in District 7 and Joni Ricks-Oddie in District 9. Each secured the majority required to win outright, leaving no outstanding City Council contests for the November general election.
