Busy Month at Port of Los Angeles, Cargo Activity Surges Up 16 Percent

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Cargo activity at the Port of Los Angeles surged up 16 percent last month, making October the busiest ever for a western hemisphere container port, harbor officials announced Monday.

The port moved 814,574 twenty-foot equivalent units last month, outpacing the stretch of time last year. Imports alone grew 16.4 percent to 417,311 TEUs, while exports shot up 23.3 percent to 166,406 TEUs.

The overall volume made last month the busiest in history for a cargo port in the western hemisphere, according to American Association of Port Authorities figures cited by officials at the Port of Los Angeles.

"We applaud our container terminals, labor and all of the stakeholders in our supply chain that drove this record-breaking volume with speed, efficiency and reliability," Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka said.

"It's encouraging to see that when cargo surges, we have the infrastructure, equipment and human capital to keep the boxes moving," he said.

Overall cargo volumes at the port are up 5.25 percent to 7.18 million TEUs so far this year, compared with the same 10 months last year.
