California History and Biblical Scripture

In turbulent times like this it is necessary to talk about the particulars. Because when we talk about particular stories, we are moved by them.

So if someone starts talking in general terms about Caananites practicing human sacrifice in the era of 1000 BCE and that someone doesn’t tell us the story from the Bible book Judges of Jephthah’s sacrifice of his daughter, his only child, it has a different sort of effect on us.

For the next couple of weeks at First Congregational Church of Long Beach we will be, from the pulpit, paying attention to the particulars in California history. We talk about, in general terms, what happened to Indigenous people. We talk about, in general terms, what happened at the early ranchos. We talk about, in general terms, what happened at gold mines. We talk about all this generally but in this series particular stories are going to be shared.

There will be particular stories from California history and then another particular story about something that happened in Eastern Pennsylvania.
