🌱 Cargo Overboard + Bixby Knolls Burglary Suspect + Guns Seized

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Long Beach. Yes, even on Sunday!

(Patch Media)

Morning, Long Beach! Let's get you all caught up to start this Sunday, December 5 off on an informed note. Here's what's going on today in Long Beach.

How often do container ships heading for LB lose cargo? Also, the PD caught a burglary suspect in Bixby Knolls. Finally, 16 more guns are off the streets.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 66 Low: 49.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. There's a different type of pollution taking place near the port of LB. A Friday report revealed that a COSCO container ship heading to LB "lost dozens of containers overboard in the Pacific Ocean" in November. Reportedly, 32 containers went overboard. A year ago, the ONE Apus lost "more than 1,800 containers overboard" while heading to LB. (gCaptain)
  2. What were the helicopters over Bixby Knolls doing Friday? Well, for starters, they told residents on "the block just south of Carson Street between Long Beach Boulevard and Elm Avenue" to stay inside their houses. A burglary suspect was on the loose, and K9 units joined the search. A 31-year-old man was arrested after a couple of hours "in the 4000 block of Elm Avenue." He's looking at felony charges "on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance, simple possession of methamphetamine, bringing drugs to jail and obstructing police." (LB Post)
  3. On Friday, the LBPD reported seizing 16 firearms after serving two search warrants. The PD had suspected "illegal manufacturing and trafficking of firearms" at that address. The suspects arrested are a 22-year-old man from Los Angeles and a 36-year-old man from Downey. (Long Beach Police Department)
  4. There's an encampment at the 710 Freeway and Gale Avenue that's causing problems. Residents, who are afraid of retaliation, reported Saturday that people experiencing homelessness had cut down trees from their backyards to build teepees. Youngsters say they see "people peeking through the trees" when playing, while adults recognize the smell of "meth and crack cocaine" being smoked. Caltrans, which is responsible for cleaning up that particular area, said that it works with "local partners and social service providers on encampment cleanups, and to address immediate threats to public health and safety or critical infrastructure while helping to connect people experiencing homelessness with essential services." (LB Post)
  5. LA Fitness is coming to Marina Pacifica. We learned Tuesday that the fitness giant had signed the lease to take over the storefront that Best Buy vacated in 2018. The anticipated opening date is "during the third quarter of 2022." (Newsbreak)
