City Launches Composting, Waste Reduction and Recycling Program

The Public Works Department officially launched a free program for residents to learn about waste reduction, recycling and composting.

LONG BEACH, CA — The city of Long Beach Department of Public Works officially launched a free program for residents interested in learning about waste reduction, recycling and composting.

The pilot for the Master Composter Recycler program launched in spring 2022 and is now being offered as a recurring series throughout the year at no-cost for Long Beach residents.

“The Master Composter Recycler program is a great way for residents to learn about how they can reduce waste and positively contribute to our local environment,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “We continue to identify ways to educate and engage our community in sustainability efforts to combat the global climate crisis.”

The new program helps carry out actions outlined in the Long Beach Climate Action Plan approved by the City Council in 2022. The program will include three in-person cohorts and will be held at the Public Works Environmental Services Bureau facility at 2929 W. Willow St.

MCR classes will be held starting winter 2023 on Thurdsays from Feb. 9 through March 23 at 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Spring classes will start on Thursdays from April 6 through May 18 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fall classes will be held on Saturdays starting Sept. 9 through Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Registration for winter classes is open and available at the MCR program webpage.

“After receiving high praise from last year’s pilot participants, we’re excited to offer the Master Composter Recycler program on a recurring basis in 2023,” said Eric Lopez, Director of Public Works. “We encourage those who would like to make a difference in their home and in their community to sign up for this amazing new program.”
