City Of Long Beach:Long Beach Marks National Preparedness Month In September By Encouraging Residents To Plan Ahead

The 2021 National Preparedness Month theme is “Prepare to Protect,” and the City of Long Beach’s campaign will be in line with that theme, focusing on a whole community approach. Activities will be designed to educate and encourage residents to be more prepared to help themselves and others in their neighborhood who may need additional assistance during an emergency.

DPEC is partnering with the Long Beach Community Response Team (CERT) to run weekly social media promotions throughout September with preparedness-related trivia questions for a chance to win items that could be helpful in a natural disaster or other emergency. The department will also conduct various webinars with community partner organizations to discuss topics such as the City’s Hazard Mitigation Plan, COVID-19, California wildfires and more.

Before the end of the month, DPEC’s goal is to inspire more Long Beach residents to make a plan and build a preparedness kit that would allow them to be self-sufficient for up to seven days during an emergency, in addition to learning basic lifesaving skills such as CPR and first aid techniques.

“We want to instill and support resiliency in our residents and business community to respond and recover quickly from a disaster,” said Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications Department Director Reggie Harrison. “Residents should also sign-up for Alert Long Beach, to receive emergency notifications from the City in the event of a disaster.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) also recognizes National Preparedness Month and urges communities every September to plan ahead because disasters don’t wait.
