City Of Long Beach:Long Beach Seeks Volunteers For 14th Annual Bike And Pedestrian Count

Accurate count data helps the City determine the safety and effectiveness of existing infrastructure and provides staff with key information for designing new projects. The more volunteers who join the effort, the more locations the City can analyze.

Volunteers must sign-up online and will receive bike and pedestrian count forms and instructions electronically or by mail, based on personal preference. The completed count forms can be scanned and returned via email or returned by mail.

Volunteers also must be available to participate in the count at one or more of the following times: 

  • 7 a.m. to 9 a.m, Thursday, October 21
  • 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, October 21
  • Noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, October 23 
  • Walking, bike and e-scooter use has noticeably increased over the past five years, especially during the pandemic as individuals rely more on physically-distanced outdoor activities. A spike in bicycle ridership was seen nationwide in 2020, with local ridership up an estimated 60% that year alone.  

    This Long Beach Bike and Pedestrian Count is one of the longest-running such counts in the country, and organizers say its yearly success has been dependent on the help of dedicated volunteers.
