Fuego at Hotel Maya’s “Mayapalooza” presents “Of Gods and Animals: Creatures of Maya Art and Glyphs” program with Catherine Nuckols, M.A., Ph.D. Candidate, Art History and Latin American Studies at Tulane University, to discuss ancient Maya World, Deities and Animals, on April 23.

Of Gods and Animals: Creatures of Maya Art and Glyphs

The lecture program and workshop begins with an “Introduction to the ancient Maya world” exploring areas as “How do we know what we know about the ancient Maya?” to include archaeology, art history and ethnography; and “Most common deities in Maya art and glyphs” featuring The Hero Twins: Jun Ajaw and Yax Baluun, Ixiim the Maize God, K’awiil, Chahk, and Ajaw. The next segment is an “Introduction to the Maya hieroglyphic writing system” with a discussion on the “Most common animals in Maya art and glyphs” featuring the jaguar, monkey, deer, birds with macaw, quetzal, vulture, and the gopher and rat. The workshop begins with an “Explanation of activity” as guests “Create their own Maya inscription” by trying to write the following phrase in Maya glyphs: “On Sunday, April 23, 2023, [Participant’s Name] wrote these glyphs at Hotel Maya.” A glyph “word bank” will be provided for participants to consult or trace onto their monument printout.
