Hotel Maya's ‘Maya-Animals’ Celebrates the ‘Snake’ on September 18

To celebrate the “Snake,” one of the Mayan animals most popular and powerful symbols in Mayan mythology and culture, Hotel Maya will host a live Mesoamerican storytelling dance performance in Fuego for educational purposes and complimentary photos on Sunday, September 18 from 12-3 p.m.

Returning for a special encore performance, the beloved Copali-Copili Mesoamerican dance group will perform unique and captivating dances to honor and tell the story of the snake.

In Mayan culture, the snake represented a very important social and religious symbol for the Mayans. Mythology describes snakes as being the way celestial bodies such as the sun and stars cross the heavens. Mayans were fascinated with the way snakes swallow their prey whole, letting it decompose inside their bodies. They interpreted snakes shedding their skins as a symbol of rebirth and renewal. Great supernatural snakes frequently shed another being from their mouths, such as a warrior, an ancestor, or a god. Snakes were so revered that one of the main Mesoamerican deities, Quetzalcoatl, was represented as a feathered serpent.
