Jet Skier Found Alive Miles Offshore After Night Missing In Ocean Off Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA — A jet skier who disappeared off the Long Beach coast Sunday evening was found alive Monday morning after an overnight search by local and federal crews, authorities said.

Paul Anthony Carbullido, 53, was found shortly after 11 a.m. and was alive and talking before being taken to a hospital, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman told City News Service.

Carbullido was last seen about 7 p.m. Sunday in the ocean east of the Queen's Gate Entrance channel after becoming separated from a personal watercraft, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police said Carbullido fell from a jet ski while riding with a group of other people and was considered at risk.

The emergency was reported at about 10 p.m. Sunday, when authorities received a 911 call saying two people from a group of jet skiers were missing, Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Jack Crabtree told City News Service.

A woman in her 40s who had also fallen into the water managed to swim to rocks along the breakwater between Queen's Gate and LA Light.

At about 10:30 p.m., the operator of a 20-foot powerboat heard the woman screaming for help and called 911, Crabtree said. Long Beach lifeguards rescued her before she was transferred to a Los Angeles Fire Department fire boat and taken by ambulance to a hospital.

The two missing jet skis were later recovered outside the breakwater, one at about 1:15 a.m. Monday and the other about 30 minutes later, according to Crabtree.

The overnight search for Carbullido involved four Long Beach Fire Department fire boats, LAPD boats, a Coast Guard vessel and a Coast Guard helicopter, according to fire and Coast Guard officials.

Details about where Carbullido was found and his condition at the hospital were not immediately available.
