Did someone say, “Pickleball”?! The craze is outpacing the courts these days and Jewish Long Beach and the Alpert JCC is doing its part to provide three new courts to Long Beach’s inventory. The sport is popular for people of all ages and is easy to play. There’s just one requirement, you need a membership at the Alpert JCC—recently named a Top 5 Long Beach Gym in the LBPost.com. On October 2, the entire community is invited to preview the center from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., including the newly striped Pickleball courts, and take advantage of discounted rates when they sign-up that day.

Those who attend can take part in FREE fitness classes, open swim, tours of the facilities, youth activities on the early childhood education playground, and more.

According to USA Pickleball (yes, it is sanctioned) the sport was developed in 1965 and became the fastest growing sport in America in 2020. The City of Long Beach has made it known they would like 20 more courts to accommodate demand.

“The court is the same size as a badminton court and we can fit three courts on one basketball court,” said Kevin Giser, the chief operating and development officer for Jewish Long Beach and the Alpert JCC. “Add a net, some paddles, and a ball, and we’re providing a great new activity for all our members.”

With seniors back in the Center, Giser mentioned there might be possibility of a Silver Sneakers Pickleball tournament in the future.
