Long Beach Spelling Bees Offering $1,000 to Student, Adult Winners

The Long Beach spelling bee featuring competitors in grades 3 to 5 will win some good speller $1,000.

The National Elementary School Spelling Bee begins at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bay Shore Church auditorium, 5100 E. The Toledo. Justin Rudd's nonprofit Community Action Team is providing the $1,000 prize. 

School permission is not required for a student to compete. The contestant entry fee is $30 if received on event day and $5 for each spectator. The entry form is available online.

Third- to fifth-graders from public, private and parochial schools are eligible to enter. Home-schooled pupils are also welcome.

All competitors must sign in by 1:30 p.m. If more than 100 students register, there will be a spell-off at 1:45 p.m. with the best spellers advancing to the 2 p.m. finals.

Adults get to compete in the National Adult Spelling Bee at 4:30 p.m. The speller must be age 16 and older and a resident or student in the United States. The winner will also receive $1,000.

Entry fee is $30 if received on event day; more information and an entry form is available on the event website. Spectator tickets are $5 each.
