Happy Monday, neighbors! Let's get this day started. Here's everything happening in town today.

The smell around the Dominguez Channel should be back to normal. Also, LB's tallest building is open for occupancy. Finally, putting up a tree this year will cost you.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Dominguez Channel Update: It stinks — a little? L.A. County announced Friday that because "air quality has significantly improved," it will now end the assistance to displaced residents. Some 3,000 families are expected to return to their homes in Carson, LB, and other affected areas. Some residents claim that they still feel sick and county officials do acknowledge that the "odors may continue," however, "air monitoring levels for hydrogen sulfide over the past two weeks have consistently measured at near pre-incident levels and are now measuring below the state's air quality standard level of 30 parts per billion." (LB Post)
  2. Located at 777 East Ocean Boulevard, the Shoreline Gateway has the distinction of being LB's tallest building. After dealing with the pandemic, supply issues, and labor shortages, the venue is finally open to tenants. As of Friday, 20% of residential units are leased. The three commercial spaces on the first floor are still waiting for tenants. If you are looking for a place to live, a studio goes for about $2,960 while the penthouse rents for $15,795. You do have a breathtaking view of the ocean and the Villa Riviera. Oh, and the building has a dog-washing station and gym. (LB Business Journal)
  3. Expect to pay more for a Christmas tree this year. If you enjoy eating chocolate out of socks in front of an evergreen tree -- real or fake -- in December, you will likely pay "between 10% and 30% more." A Sunday report notes that selection is significantly smaller. Some farmers have still not rebounded from the 2009 recession and were not able to plant sufficient numbers of trees to allow for a sizable harvest this year. And, if you're looking for an artificial tree and find empty shelves, just look to the ocean and see the backlog of container ships. The trees are in of those containers. Probably. (KTLA)
  4. Officials remind us that there are plenty of places to get initial COVID shots, follow-up boosters, and tests during the holiday season. They also encourage residents to "keep wearing a mask in public spaces." While appointments are encouraged, they aren't required. (@MoveLBForward)
  5. According to a Sunday report, "Long Beach is on track for another exceptionally violent year." In 2020, the city's shootings were at a five-year high. By the end of 2021, we are slated to set another record. If you live or do business in "Downtown, Central, West and North Long Beach," you are more likely to be caught in the crossfire than in different neighborhoods. Police point to sentencing and bail reforms, as well as ghost guns. (LB Post)
