Police ID Man In Fatal Crash With Teen Driver

LONG BEACH, CA – Authorities identified a man Friday who was killed in a crash that also injured a teen driver. The cars involved in the crash, which occurred about 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, both ended up on the grass parkway at the southwest corner of the intersection of Studebaker Road and Pacific Coast Highway, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

An off-duty fireman came to the aid of a 58-year-old Balmor Alvarenga of Los Angeles but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, a 17- year-old Huntington Beach boy who was at the wheel of 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse, sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital, police said.

The preliminary investigation determined the teen, whose name was withheld because he is a minor, was driving south on PCH, approaching Studebaker Road, "and weaving in and out of traffic," according to a police statement.

"One witness stated the Mitsubishi was traveling in excess of 60 mph," police said. "Just prior to entering the intersection, the driver of the Mitsubishi swerved his vehicle to the left to avoid a vehicle making a left turn and then swerved back to the right. Upon swerving back to the right, the Mitsubishi traveled into and across the eastbound lanes of Studebaker Road west of PCH, where it collided with a 2016 Toyota Corolla ...."
