Congressional Races In Long Beach

Long Beach voters participated in two U.S. House contests, with different congressional districts covering portions of the city and the results contributing to the nationwide battle for control of Congress.

In the 42nd Congressional District, incumbent Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia, a former Long Beach mayor, faced Republican Brian Burley.

Meanwhile, in the 44th Congressional District, incumbent Democratic Rep. Nanette Barragán faced Republican Genevieve Angel.

Both contests formed part of California's 52 congressional elections, which followed the redrawing of district boundaries under Proposition 50. The changes added another dimension to a midterm election in which both parties were seeking to influence the balance of power in Washington.

Long Beach Community College Trustee Election

Closer to home, voters in Area 5 of the Long Beach Community College District chose between Huy "Henry" Nguyen, a school district administrator, and Susana Gonzalez Edmond, an education consultant and businesswoman.

The winner will succeed outgoing trustee Virginia Baxter on the five-member board overseeing Long Beach City College, including its budget, academic programs, facilities and long-term planning.

The district includes communities beyond Long Beach, and only voters residing within Trustee Area 5 participated in the contest.

The election came as the college continued working to meet students' academic and workforce needs while managing its finances, campus facilities and institutional priorities.

California State Senate And Assembly

Long Beach voters also participated in state legislative contests, although the races appearing on individual ballots depended on their residential addresses.

In the 26th State Senate District, Democrats Sarah Rascón and Sara Hernandez competed for the seat, while incumbent Democratic Assemblymember Josh Lowenthal faced fellow Democrat Carolyn J. Essex in the 69th Assembly District.

The results will determine who represents those districts in Sacramento as lawmakers confront questions involving housing affordability, transportation, public safety, education and the state's financial outlook.

Long Beach's Municipal Elections Were Decided In June

Unlike neighboring communities with City Council races on Tuesday's ballot, Long Beach settled its municipal contests during the June 2 primary.

Mayor Rex Richardson and City Auditor Laura Doud secured reelection, while five City Council candidates won the majorities needed to avoid November runoffs.

Mary Zendejas won the District 1 contest, Kristina Duggan won District 3, Megan Kerr won District 5, Vivian Malauulu won District 7 and Joni Ricks-Oddie won District 9.

As a result, Long Beach's November election focused primarily on federal and state representation, the community college trustee contest and countywide and statewide ballot questions.

Los Angeles County Sheriff And Ballot Measures

Across Los Angeles County, incumbent Sheriff Robert Luna faced former Sheriff Alex Villanueva in a rematch of their 2022 contest, when Luna defeated Villanueva to become sheriff.

County voters also considered two proposed charter amendments addressing public safety labor disputes and government ethics.

Measure A proposed establishing binding arbitration for certain disputes involving county public safety employees while prohibiting strikes by specified workers, including district attorney investigators, medical examiner personnel, lifeguards and certain civilian public safety employees.

Measure E sought to strengthen the independence and authority of the county's ethics oversight system, including the Los Angeles County Ethics Commission and Office of Ethics Compliance.

Both measures required a simple majority for approval.

Gubernatorial Race

California voters headed to the polls Tuesday, facing high gas and grocery prices, the effects of climate change on wildfires and rising seas amid a shortage in insurance coverage and the ever-present housing affordability crisis.

The governor’s race was somewhat anticlimactic following a chaotic primary with a crowded field of candidates roiled when the frontrunner was forced to step down amid sexual assault allegations. Since then, Becerra maintained a steady lead over Hilton in the polls.

In the final days of the election, a new SurveyUSA poll showed Becerra with a 22-point lead.

Congressional Races

All 52 of California’s Congressional seats were on the ballot.

Congressional races across California were under intense scrutiny following voter approval of Proposition 50, a partisan redistricting measure expected to reshape the state’s political map. Thanks to the redistricting, only a handful of districts were truly competitive. Democrats hoped to flip as many as five Republican House seats in a bid to overturn the GOP’s slim House majority.

Democrats think they can flip as many as five seats, with four seeming very much in reach, according to the polls. Both parties are spending like control of the House is on the line.

Propositions

There were 14 statewide propositions on the ballot this week. Arguably, the most hot-button ballot initiatives involve taxation. Proposition 40 is the highly discussed billionaire tax, while Propositions 41 and 42 aim to counter the measure. Proposition 3 also addresses taxes on the state's highest earners.
