🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 43.2% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 29.7% don't celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 2.7% don't celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 24.3% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) The Long Beach Police Department had a busy Friday night. Reports came in beginning around 11 p.m. that a man was "wielding a shotgun" and making threats of shooting people around Orange Avenue and East Wesley Drive. Officers located the suspect in the nearby homeless encampment at Orange and Autrilla Scott Lane. They also found the shotgun. (MSN)
2) Long Beach is planning to overhaul its zoning. Of special importance are the changes coming to "the PCH, 10th Street and Anaheim Street corridors" that could lead to more housing developments in the future. At the same time, they could "prohibit unwanted uses like liquor stores, motels or more industrial uses." Buildings could be six stories tall and allow for residential and retail space. The City intends to maintain the two-story height limit in other residential areas. (Long Beach Post)
3) Pickleball players, rejoice! Councilwoman Suzie Price announced Thursday that the Billie Jean King Tennis Center "will have four Pickleball courts available starting at 2:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays with a five dollar drop in fee." The City is still working on getting more dedicated courts at Marina Vista Park and other locations. (Councilwoman Suzie Price)
4) Friday spelled the end of the girls' tennis season for the Wilson Bruins. The players had reached the "second round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs," when Los Alamitos proved too strong to beat. Even so, the players did a great job; of special note were Irit Paiement and Vanessa Holden. (The562.org)
5) If you had planned to visit the outdoor vaccine and testing clinics at Veterans Stadium, CSULB, and LBCC, listen up! There's been a forecast of heavy rain for this coming week, and these locations will be closed. However, you can visit the COVID-19 testing site at Ramona Park as well as Cabrillo HS on Monday. On Tuesday, only the school location will be open. (Long Beach Health Department)
