Sig Alert 91 Freeway: Big Rig Dropped 2,000 Pounds Of Sand

A traffic collision caused a big rig to spill 2,000 pounds of sand in the roadway early Thursday, backing up traffic on the 91 Freeway.

LONG BEACH, CA — A big rig collision at Cherry Avenue on the eastbound Artesia (91) Freeway shut down two lanes for hours, backing up traffic for miles Thursday morning.

The crash shut down the 3 and 4 lanes at 8:35 a.m. A big rig with front-end damage spilled a 2,000-pound bag of rubber sand on the freeway, and the cleanup was still going on as of 11 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. One to two lanes of the freeway were open as of 11 a.m. The Cherry Avenue onramp and Paramount offramp remained closed.
