Victoria Lani on Family Values for the Black People

It's not always about being right

Tradition became tradition for a reason. It functions to make life easier to live. So why do we want to break the tradition of the Mr. man sit at the head of the table as your mamma taught ya to do him? And we are not out the woods yet. Why do we want to break the tradition of, Mr. man honor your wife and take care of your wife like Christ died for the church? Where have we've gone wrong? Do we know who we follow? Do we follow God or the white man's ice colder?

I love you, but you are wrong is not how we solve every disagreement and still stay married. He wants to be a mentor for young men that you believe are beyond help. No one believes in it but him, but his desire to help this type of young man is strong and he feels compelled to go on with it anyway. It is his dream to help build a strong nation of black people alongside you as a black woman. Do you know that you being right and standing up for your rights is so heartbreaking to him that you are standing up for the decline of one accord in your marriage? Who taught you that right and wrong does not have rank? He'll love how you respected his mind and loved him through a bad decision.

Do you know how to tell yourself that your mother is not going to hug, have sexual intercourse with you and kiss you at night? She hardly wants to pay your dental bills. Why do you need to go to her with every little argument that he and she, I mean, you and him have? Now, you are screaming mad that she is a medaling witch with you and him. Did you not help to create that mess? Do you know that the battle of the sexes should have been over before you tied the knot? Do you know to put him above your family? Do you know that this does not mean that you dishonor your family. If anything, it honors them more. It makes all of you stronger all together.
