Woman Killed While Lying In Downtown Long Beach Street

LONG BEACH, CA — A woman was killed after she was struck by a vehicle while lying in a downtown Long Beach street late Monday night, authorities said.

The woman was lying in the roadway near Sixth Street and Pacific Avenue at about 10:52 p.m. when she was struck, according to the Long Beach Post, citing the Long Beach Police Department.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel treated the woman at the scene, but she died from her injuries, police said. Authorities had not publicly identified her as of Tuesday morning. Police have not said why the woman was lying in the roadway before the collision.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to police. Speed and impaired driving do not appear to have contributed to the collision. The death marked Long Beach's 35th fatal traffic collision of 2026, according to the Post. The city recorded 53 fatal traffic collisions in 2025, its highest annual total in more than a decade.

Last year's toll included 32 pedestrians, bicyclists and e-scooter riders, according to previous Long Beach Post reporting.

The latest death came just over a week after a separate fatal pedestrian collision on Pacific Avenue. In that case, 65-year-old Juvenal Banderas was struck by three vehicles on Sept. 13 north of Pacific Coast Highway. Two of the vehicles left the scene, while the driver of a third remained and cooperated with investigators, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Patch contacted the Long Beach Police Department Tuesday morning seeking additional information, including whether investigators know why the woman was lying in the roadway and whether witnesses or surveillance footage have been located. No response had been received as of publication.
