Two Young Boys And Man Shot to Death in Canoga Park

Police are investigating the shootings as a murder-suicide, the second to kill two children in the San Fernando Valley in two weeks.

CANOGA PARK — A man and two young boys were shot to death in Canoga Park on Sunday evening in what Los Angeles police are investigating as a double homicide-suicide.

The slain boys were believed to be about 10-years-old, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. It would be the second murder-suicide to take the lives of young children in the San Fernando Valley in less than two weeks.

Officers were called to an apartment in the 8000 block of Owensmouth Avenue near Strathern Street shortly after 7:15 p.m. Sunday, according to Officer David Orris of the Los Angeles Police Department's Operations Center.

Officers found a man in his mid-40s and two boys dead from gunshot wounds.

Investigators are treating the case as a double homicide-suicide, Orris said.

Authorities did not immediately release the identities of the victims, and the relationship between the man and the two boys was not available.

The investigation is ongoing.

The case follows the May 27 shooting deaths of a toddler and 6-day-old baby at the hands of their mother, who also killed their children's father and herself in North Hills, according to police. It comes the same day that the Washington Post released a report on the epidemic of domestic violence deaths, noting that three fathers killed their families in the last week in the United States.
