The California Department of Justice is investigating, authorities said.

| Updated

LANCASTER, CA — An encounter between a knife-wielding man and Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies Saturday at a Metrolink station in Lancaster left a deputy hurt and the man dead following multiple deputy-involved shootings, according to authorities.

Deputies from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station responded around 2 p.m. to the area of Lancaster Boulevard and Sierra Highway for a call about an assault suspect with multiple knives, according to the sheriff’s department.

“Upon contacting the suspect, a deputy was assaulted with a knife, resulting in a deputy involved shooting,” the department said in an advisory. “Moments later, a second deputy involved shooting occurred.”

The man was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at an area hospital, and the deputy injured during the knife attack was admitted for treatment at a local hospital, according to the department.

“We are grateful that our deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries and will be returning home to their loved ones,” Sheriff Robert Luna said in the advisory. “Incidents like this are a stark reminder that every day, law enforcement professionals like our Deputies step into unpredictable and rapidly evolving situations in service to protecting our communities.”

The California Department of Justice is investigating the incident under Assembly Bill 1506, the sheriff’s department said, which requires the state agency to investigate all officer-involved shootings resulting in the death of an unarmed civilian.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the justice department at 916-210-2841, according to the sheriff’s department, or anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477, download the P3 Tips Mobile App or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
