LOS ANGELES, CA — Firefighters rescued a small dog Tuesday after it became trapped about 7 feet underground inside a narrow pipe in Los Feliz, authorities said.
Fire crews responded at 9:15 a.m. to the 1800 block of North Winona Boulevard, where they found the animal stuck inside a pipe measuring about 8 to 10 inches wide, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The incident was upgraded to a technical rescue, and members of the department's specialized animal rescue team were dispatched. About 26 firefighters responded, along with personnel from the department's Urban Search and Rescue team.
The dog was pulled from the pipe about 1 hour and 21 minutes after the initial 911 call, the LAFD said.
Aerial footage aired by NBC Los Angeles showed rescuers lifting the small dog, possibly a Pomeranian, from the hole outside an apartment complex. The dog appeared to be in good condition, the station reported.
The Southern California Gas Co., Los Angeles Department of Transportation and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power were also notified during the rescue.
It was not immediately clear how the dog became trapped.
