Hollywood’s Funniest Night Out Might Just Be a Puppet Show

There are plenty of comedy shows in Los Angeles. There are plenty of live theater experiences. But there is only one production where an audience suggestion can send a flock of mischievous puppets spiraling into comedic chaos, all while a team of world-class puppeteers performs in plain sight.

That's the magic behind Brian Henson's Puppet Up!, the wildly inventive live show returning to Hollywood's Ricardo Montalbán Theatre for a limited eight-performance engagement from July 31 through August 9.

This isn't the Sesame Street, nor is it a nostalgic Muppet reunion. Puppet Up! is a unique blend of improv comedy, sketch performance, live music, and the artistry of Jim Henson-style puppetry into an adults-only evening that feels as much like an improv club.

Nothing is scripted quite the same way twice. Created by Brian Henson, chairman of The Jim Henson Company and son of legendary puppeteer Jim Henson, the production has spent more than two decades entertaining audiences from Edinburgh Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival to sold-out performances across North America. Each show thrives on spontaneity, with audience participation driving much of the evening's humor.

What makes Puppet Up! especially fun is that the illusion isn't hidden. Unlike traditional puppet productions that conceal the performers, the talented Henson puppeteers race across the stage in full view, simultaneously manipulating multiple characters while improvising dialogue, songs, and outrageous scenarios in real time. Large projection screens allow audiences to watch both the polished puppet performances and the athletic choreography happening below, creating two performances unfolding simultaneously.

It's a rare opportunity to appreciate both the finished magic and the extraordinary craftsmanship behind it.

Hosting the mayhem is comedian Patrick Bristow, whose improvisational background including work with The Groundlings and television favorites such as Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Whose Line Is It Anyway?, makes him the perfect ringmaster for an evening where anything can happen.

One moment may feature razor-sharp audience-inspired improv; the next, the production pivots into recreated sketches originally developed decades ago by Jim and Jane Henson alongside Frank Oz. These classic pieces offer longtime Henson fans an unexpected treat while introducing newer audiences to the creative roots that helped redefine puppetry.

That combination of heritage and irreverence is what gives Puppet Up! its distinctive personality.
