LOS ANGELES, CA — Los Angeles County residents can earn up to $600 this summer by agreeing to leave one of their cars parked for five weeks and finding other ways to get around.
Metro is expanding its One Car Challenge across the county after testing the program with about 300 households in Santa Monica in 2023.
The second phase will include approximately 2,000 households and, for the first time, will be open to households that own only one car.
Participants must be at least 21 years old, live in Los Angeles County and have at least one vehicle in their household.
During the five-week challenge, households will agree to keep one car at home while using alternatives such as public transit, walking, biking, bike share or carpooling.
Participants can earn up to $600 per household.
Travel activity and vehicle mileage will be tracked through the GoCarma mobile app, which automatically records trips and odometer information.
Metro launched the first One Car Challenge with the city of Santa Monica in fall 2023. Participating households were offered up to $599, along with a $50 TAP card and free bike-share rides.
The pilot resulted in fewer solo driving trips and increased use of walking, bicycles and scooters, according to Metro.
The countywide expansion is intended to test whether financial incentives can reduce driving on a larger scale and provide data that could shape future transportation programs and policies.
Metro officials said the effort could also help Los Angeles prepare for increased transportation demands ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
