GLENDALE, CA — The Alex Theatre has extended its 70mm presentation of Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" by at least two weeks following strong audience demand, theater officials announced.
Screenings at the historic Glendale venue will now continue through Aug. 20.
The Alex said it became the highest-grossing U.S. theater presenting the film in 70mm during its opening run.
The engagement began July 17 after the theater completed an extensive cinema systems upgrade that included the installation of 70mm film projectors. It marked the Alex's return to first-run studio films after more than 35 years.
Officials said moviegoers have traveled from across Southern California and beyond to see Nolan's film in the large-format presentation.
"We're incredibly grateful to the people of Los Angeles and to film lovers from across Southern California for making our presentation of 'The Odyssey' in 70mm such an extraordinary success," Alex Artistic Director Miles Williams said in a statement.
Williams said the turnout demonstrated continued interest in watching major films in historic theaters and thanked Universal Pictures for partnering with the Alex on the release.
The theater, which opened in 1925, hosts concerts, comedy, dance, theatrical productions, films and other special events. The 1,300-seat venue is located at 216 N. Brand Blvd., just north of the Americana at Brand.
"The Odyssey," based on Homer's ancient epic, stars Matt Damon as Odysseus. The cast also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton and John Leguizamo.
Nolan wrote and directed the film, which was produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas through their company, Syncopy.
