SAN PEDRO, CA — The Los Angeles Harbor Commission has approved $70.2 million in construction contracts for parking, roadway and other improvements along the L.A. waterfront ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, port officials announced Thursday.
The larger of the two contracts, valued at $66.5 million, will fund a new parking area and roadway improvements near Harbor Boulevard and 22nd Street.
The 17.5-acre parking area will include up to 2,100 spaces, a public restroom, pedestrian walkways connecting to Harbor Boulevard and Miner Street and a trolley stop, according to the Port of Los Angeles.
A section of Harbor Boulevard will also be expanded to two lanes in each direction between the S.P. Slip and 22nd Street, and a landscaped pedestrian walkway will be added, officials said.
The contract was awarded to Griffith Company, with construction expected to begin in November and be completed by January 2028.
"These projects reflect our continued commitment to the LA Waterfront as our City prepares to welcome visitors from around the world for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games," Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka said in a statement. "They will also enhance public access to West Harbor and our active, visitor-serving waterfront, creating lasting benefits for generations to come."
In a separate action, the Harbor Commission approved a $3.7 million construction contract for a restroom building and shade structures at the west end of Wilmington Waterfront Park.
That contract was awarded to CALTEC Corp., with work expected to begin this fall and be completed in early 2028.
The two contracts total $70.2 million, while the overall cost of the projects is estimated at $86.4 million, according to port officials.
The projects will be funded through the Port of Los Angeles' Public Access Investment Plan, which allocates 10% of the port's operating income to public-access projects.
The L.A. waterfront is scheduled to host sailing competitions during the 2028 Olympic Games.
