Flight Forced To Return To LAX Shortly After Takeoff: Reports

LOS ANGELES, CA — An American Airlines flight bound for Chicago was forced to return to Los Angeles International Airport early Friday shortly after takeoff, according to reports.

American Airlines Flight 1009 departed LAX shortly after midnight, more than an hour behind schedule, KTLA reported, citing FlightAware data.

The airline told ABC 7 that an indicator light alerted the crew that the aircraft might not be able to detect hazardous weather ahead, prompting the pilots to return to Los Angeles.

Flight tracking data showed the plane turned around after heading east from Los Angeles. The aircraft landed safely at LAX shortly before 1 a.m., and video showed airport emergency vehicles following the plane after it touched down, KTLA reported.

Passengers were rebooked on an 8 a.m. flight to Chicago, according to ABC 7.
