A day after actress Hayden Panettiere died, authorities in South Carolina are continuing to investigate the circumstances around the 36-year-old star's death.
On Sunday afternoon, authorities responded to a suburban apartment building in Greenville, South Carolina following a report of a woman who was unresponsive, according to the Greenville Police Department.
"Upon arrival, medical assistance was administered; however, the individual, later identified as Hayden Panettiere, was pronounced deceased at the scene," police said in a statement.
Here are five things to know about Panettiere's life, death and the subsequent investigation into her passing.
Authorities arrived to the apartment building to find Panettiere in cardiac arrest, according to local news station WYFF, citing information from the Greenville County Coroner's Office.
Panettiere was temporarily staying at the apartment and was identified as a resident of California, according to the office.
TMZ reported that the apartment belonged to Brian Hickerson, descried by the outlet as Panettiere's "longtime on-and-off boyfriend."
The Coroner's Office completed an autopsy on Monday.
"No signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death. The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies," reads a release from the office.
Authorities said the investigation remains active and it could take up to three months for the full results of the autopsy to be returned, The New York Times reported.
Though authorities have not released an official cause of death, one 911 dispatcher described the nature of the incident as an "overdose" as first responders were heading to the scene.
The dispatch audio, aired by WYFF, includes a dispatcher telling first responders that they were responding to an overdose and that CPR was in progress. Another person on the recording describes the incident as "cardiac arrest," in line with authorities' later description of her death.
A person described as an acquaintance of Panettiere was the one who called 911, USA Today reported.
TMZ reported that Narcan was found in the apartment where she died.
Panettiere had been open about her private battles and wrote at length about them in the memoir, "This Is Me," which came out in May. She described lifelong scars from her early fame, and acknowledged being addicted to alcohol and enduring postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter, Kaya, with Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko in 2014.
Kaya, now 11, began living with Klitschko full-time in Ukraine when she was 2. At the time, the actor was struggling with mental health and addiction.
She said on a podcast in May she was in a "horrible cycle for years of battling depression and anxiety and alcoholism and substance abuse" while "just trying to find my way back, my way out of the darkness."
She entered rehab in 2015, while filming "Nashville."
Her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who was also an actor, died of a heart condition in 2023, at age 28.
His death was described as sudden by his family at the time. They said Jansen Panettiere died due to "cardiomegaly (enlarged heart,) coupled with aortic valve complications."
Cardiomegaly is a sign of another condition. Heart damage and certain types of heart disease can cause an enlarged heart, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Aortic valve complications can occur when the aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body, does not function properly, according to Mayo Clinic.
