LA's Inside Safe Program Moves 33 People, 5 Pets Off Westlake Street

LOS ANGELES, CA — Thirty-three homeless people and five pets were moved from a Westlake encampment into shelter through the city's Inside Safe program, Mayor Karen Bass' office announced Monday.

The operation targeted an encampment near Ocean View Avenue and South Lake Street and was carried out in coordination with Los Angeles City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez last week.

City teams connected people living at the encampment with shelter and supportive services while removing tents, makeshift structures and illegally dumped debris from the area.

It was the city's 139th Inside Safe operation, Bass said.

Bass said the encampment was near hospitals, houses of worship and apartment buildings and that clearing it would restore sidewalk access for residents, medical workers and schoolchildren.

Hernandez said the operation connected dozens of unhoused residents with shelter, services and a path toward permanent housing.

"We are grateful to the outreach workers and City teams who approached this operation with care and patience," Hernandez said. "Our work continues until every neighbor has a safe and stable place to call home."
