DIAMOND BAR, CA — Drivers traveling through the San Gabriel Valley should prepare for a series of full weekend closures on the westbound 60 Freeway for the next five weeks.
All westbound lanes of the 60 will be closed between Lemon Avenue and Diamond Bar Boulevard during five consecutive weekends as crews continue work on the SR-57/SR-60 Confluence Project, according to the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments.
The first closure is scheduled from midnight to 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, followed by another closure from midnight to 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30.
The same closure hours are scheduled for Sept. 5-6, Sept. 12-13, Sept. 19-20 and Sept. 26-27.
The westbound closures were moved up following the ahead-of-schedule completion of recent construction on the eastbound side, according to SGVCOG.
Several ramps, freeway connectors and local streets will also be affected:
Detour signs will be posted, but officials urged motorists to avoid the area, use alternate freeway routes or allow significant extra travel time.
The closures are needed to safely accommodate construction aimed at improving traffic flow and safety at the heavily traveled interchange, according to SGVCOG.
The SR-57/SR-60 Confluence Project is intended to address merging patterns between trucks and other vehicles while reducing congestion along the roughly 2-mile stretch of freeway.
The corridor carries approximately 350,000 vehicles per day, according to SGVCOG. The American Transportation Research Institute has ranked the area as California's worst truck bottleneck and the seventh-worst in the nation.
Construction schedules are subject to change because of weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
