LOS ANGELES, CA — A complaint filed against a facility that cooks and packs in-flight meals for airlines out of Los Angeles International Airport alleges workers were exposed to unhealthy and unsanitary conditions after an employee was told to clean dozens of dishes covered in mold and maggots, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The incident occurred in June and the complaint to California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health was filed last month against Flying Food Group, according to the Times, which reported the worker at the Inglewood facility was instructed to clean moldy dishes from a cart that had not been opened for an extended period. The employee, Sonia Cerón, suffered stomach pain, a headache and a nasal sensation, the newspaper reported.
The company in a statement accused union Unite Here Local 11 of a "false and misleading" narrative and denied the allegations, according to the Times, citing "protracted and contentious negotiations."
Previous complaints against the company include, among others, sexual harassment and retaliation, wage violations, and disruption of union activities in the form of locking emergency exits on the day of a planned picket, the newspaper reported.
