CA Oceanfront Restaurant Faces Closure Over Fears Of 'Sudden Collapse:' Report

A judge ordered the popular cliffside restaurant to close amid concerns that unstable land could trigger a sudden collapse into the ocean.

PISMO BEACH, CA — Ventana Grill, the popular restaurant overlooking the Pismo Beach coastline, has been ordered to close by Sept. 18 and remain closed indefinitely because of concerns about the stability of the cliff beneath the building, SFGATE reported, citing court records.

The order follows a legal battle between the restaurant's parent company and its landlord, which has cited geotechnical findings about stability problems along the bluff. Ventana Grill staff recently said the restaurant planned to close Friday, several days before the court-ordered deadline, according to SFGATE.

"If Plaintiff is permitted to continue operations in the Restaurant Building while the building remains in an unsafe condition, Defendants will potentially incur millions of dollars of damages in the event that there is a sudden collapse of the unstable sea cliff upon which the Ventana Grill is located, as it would result in catastrophic damage to the property and serious injury or death of restaurant patrons and staff," a representative for the company that owns the building said in a past court document.
