LOS ANGELES, CA — Authorities on Thursday identified an 18-year-old man who was killed during what police described as a "running gun battle" along a busy stretch of Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake.
Roderick Garner was shot in the neck and chest at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday near Sunset Boulevard and Maltman Avenue. He died on the sidewalk, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner's office.
Two men suspected in the shooting were taken into custody, though their names have not been released, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The shooting sent people scrambling for cover inside nearby restaurants and businesses.
KTLA reported that some witnesses initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks or a car backfiring before realizing shots were being fired.
Police shut down part of Sunset Boulevard during the investigation and cleared the scene around 11:05 p.m.
