LOS ANGELES, CA — One of Los Angeles' oldest restaurants is preparing to reopen months after shutting its doors, bringing back its famous French dip sandwiches with a revamped menu and new ownership.

Cole's, which closed March 29 after nearly 118 years in business, could reopen in mid- to late November under chef and restaurateur Jeremy Fall and former Mozza Restaurant Group executive Sean Maloney, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The pair have been working to revive the downtown landmark since August, though the sale remains in escrow pending final liquor license approval, according to the Times.

The restaurant will retain its historic character while expanding its menu beyond French dip sandwiches and cocktails. New head chef Daniel Nguyen, formerly of Osteria Mozza and Lolo Wine Bar, plans to introduce dishes including fresh ravioli, prime rib frites and salmon with trout roe.

The restaurant will also offer updated French dip sandwiches, including pastrami and vegan versions, along with its signature atomic mustard.

Founded in 1908 as Cole's Pacific Electric Buffet, the restaurant is one of two longtime Los Angeles establishments that claim to have invented the French dip sandwich.

Philippe the Original, which opened the same year, also claims credit for creating the sandwich.

Cole's previous owner announced plans to close the restaurant in July 2025, citing financial losses stemming from the pandemic, Hollywood strikes and rising labor costs.
