LOS ANGELES, CA — Police were searching Sunday for the driver of a gray four-door sedan that fatally struck a 66-year-old pedestrian in South Los Angeles before leaving the scene, returning after being alerted by bystanders, then driving away again before officers arrived.
The vehicle was making a westbound turn from a gas station on West Manchester Avenue east of South Broadway about 3:45 p.m. Saturday when it struck the man, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
"The vehicle continued traveling westbound on Manchester Avenue until bystanders flagged the driver down and advised him he had struck a pedestrian," according to a police statement.
"The driver returned to the scene of the collision and stayed at the scene until the Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived. The driver left the scene prior to the arrival of officers and failed to provide his information, as required by law," the statement said.
Paramedics rushed the victim to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His identity was withheld pending notification of relatives.
A reward of up to $50,000 may be available under the city's Hit-and- Run Reward Program for information leading to the driver's identification, apprehension and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise, according to police.
