LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles City Council moved forward Friday with creating a plan to address homeless encampments and boost housing placements during the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
On Friday, the City Council approved a motion introduced by Council President Marqueece-Harris Dawson calling for homeless plan in preparation of the 2028 Games. Top city officials and relevant city departments will provide a report in 90 days providing details on the following:
Additionally, council members further requested for staff to contact the county for assistance for expanding capacity in homelessness programs.
"The 2028 Games are not just an opportunity to show off what makes L.A. special, but they're a chance to show the world hat L.A. deserves its investment," Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado, chair of the Health and Homelessness Committee, said.
"Instead of pushing unhoused neighbors to the wayside outside of public view, we can start taking meaningful, proactive measures to confront the crisis with newfound urgency, accountability and coordination," Jurado added.
She noted the upcoming report will be an important step.
"We have a responsibility to act to protect vulnerable populations and ensure that all Angelenos, housed and unhoused, continue to benefit from the 2028 Games well after the closing ceremony," Jurado added.
