In THE FUTURE IS PEACE: A SHARED JOURNEY ACROSS THE HOLY LAND, the pair takes readers on their unforgettable weeklong journey while exploring each other’s personal and national histories in a land of competing narratives, amid the turbulent push and pull of near constant war, and the recent devastation that has rocked the world. Despite the losses they have suffered, the resolve of their friendship has taught them that strength and unity are more powerful than the violence of separation. Throughout their travels, they have been constantly asked: In the face of so much pain and suffering on both sides, when there have been so many lives lost and families shattered, how can they ever find hope? Focusing on social class and interpersonal relationships, the story follows Barrett (Dirk Bogarde) who is hired as manservant when the wealthy Tony (James Fox) moves into a new house. The two form a bond, but Tony is unaware of Barrett’s ulterior motive to gain the upper hand in their relationship. To further his goals, Barrett convinces Tony to hire a maid and brings his lover (Sara Miles) into the home under the guise that they are siblings.

A pair of hapless peasants—Tahei (Minoru Chiaki) and Matashichi (Kamatari Fujiwara)—uproot their lives to enlist with the rising Yamana clan. But their witless greed keeps landing them in unfortunate circumstances. Their ingenious plan to escape into a neighboring state draws the attention of General Rokurota Makabe (Toshiro Mifune). Hiding in disguise with Princess Yuki (Misa Uehara) of the fallen Akizuki clan, Makabe enlists the help of Tahei and Matashichi for passage into Hayakawa.
