Hayao Miyazaki’s latest Oscar-winning feature is also his most autobiographical, inspired by Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel How Do You Live? (which is the Japanese title for the film), and the effect World War II had on Miyazaki's childhood. The result is one of Miyazaki’s darkest and most mature films. After losing his mother during the war, Mahito and his father move to the countryside for a fresh start. Still haunted by this loss and the recent disappearance of his new stepmom, Mahito is lured to an ancient tower by a gray heron and ends up in a world where the distinction between the living and the dead disappears. Guided by the heron, he must battle his grief and learn that he has the... capability to create a better world.
