Filmmaker Frederick Wiseman spent 29 days in 1966 at the Bridgewater State Hospital in Massachusetts, filming the treatment and mistreatment of its patients. After a year of editing, the result, the first feature from the noted documentarian, established his distinctively observational filmmaking style. Banned from public exhibition for decades and finally approved for release on First Amendment grounds in a 1991 court decision, Titicut Follies was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry in 2022. In 2016, Wiseman—whose other classic documentaries include High School (1968), Primate (1974) and Welfare (1975)— received an honorary Oscar for his “masterful and distinctive documentaries [that] examine the familiar and reveal the unexpected.”
