In person: director Adrian Lyne in conversation with Maya Montañez Smukler, head of the UCLA Film & Television Archive Research and Study Center

Adrian Lyne’s groundbreaking 1987 erotic thriller, which garnered six Oscar nominations, contributed to the phenomenal boom of this subgenre, and it remains iconic and timeless. Glenn Close is compelling in her portrayal of Alex, a book editor who has an affair with Dan (Michael Douglas), a happily married attorney whose life becomes an unbearable torture after the tryst. Passion turns into obsession; Alex not only terrorizes Dan but also his wife and young daughter. Close’s deep dive into Alex’s psychological state, exhibited in the extreme measures she takes to possess Dan, is manifested in an intense performance, and the chemistry she shares with Douglas’s riveting Dan creates simultaneously repulsive and magnetic dynamics between them.
