Co-written by Anita Loos and Jane Murfin, The Women delivers 135 of them, each with a speaking role, to the exclusion of men. The delightfully witty and rapid-fire dialogue pours out of a cadre of familiar faces, including Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, and Rosalind Russell. While most of the film unfolds in black-and-white, a delightful six-minute Technicolor fashion show is included, featuring gowns by Adrian, the iconic, MGM-based costume designer. Contributing to the distinctive looks of the cast was the uncredited hair designer, MGM veteran Sydney Guilaroff, whose film career spanned the 1930s to the 1980s and included such classics as Singin’ in the Rain (1952), North by Northwest (1959) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?... (1966)
