Rachel Portman was the first woman to win an Academy Award for Music (Original Musical or Comedy Score) for Emma. An adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, this romantic comedy stars Gwyneth Paltrow as the meddling but well-meaning heroine, whose matchmaking aims cause confusion and heartache in her circles. The film was also nominated for Ruth Myers’s costumes, and Portman would go on to be nominated two more times for her scores for The Cider House Rules (1999) and Chocolat (2000).
