Get a quick primer about the history and basics of animation, including pre-cinema flipbooks and cel paintings, and then get busy. Create your own digital animation in the Shirley Temple Education Studio, using an iPad to explore the many techniques Hollywood pros apply to bring objects and characters to life, all under the expert eye of Disney animator Wayne Unten Jr.

About Wayne Unten Jr.
Wayne Unten Jr. is a character animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios, where for more than 20 years he’s worked on films such as Wreck-It Ralph (2012), Meet the Robinsons (2007), Bolt (2008), Tangled (2010), Raya and the Last... Dragon (2021), and Moana (2016).
Unten Jr. has mentored through various organizations such as Academy Gold and taught at Cal Arts. He also enjoys sharing his own personal animation via social media accounts and his and website, animatingforfun.com. Unten Jr. studied animation at California State University Fullerton, where he met his wife, a children’s book illustrator. They live in Los Angeles with their two children.
About Drop-in Workshops for Teens
Teens can join our Education team on the third Friday of every month to explore the museum, hang out, and get creative.
Academy Museum education programs are supported by Melina and Eric Esrailian, the Beverly, Donald, and David Kobrin Fund, Apple Original Films, Dr. Kathy Fields and Dr. Garry Rayant, Ruderman Family Foundation, The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Dave and Tara Dollinger.

Workshops are designed for teens 14 and up. Snacks are provided.
All workshops are free with museum admission and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Museum admission is free for youths 17 and under.
