In person: producer Brad Simpson and Academy Governor Effie T. Brown

A suburban housewife discovers her husband has a secret life, only to find herself becoming emotionally involved with another man, in writer-director Todd Haynes’s sincere and expertly crafted homage to the 1950s melodramas of Douglas Sirk. Best Actress nominee Julianne Moore gives a perfectly pitched lead performance, with strong support from Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, Patricia Clarkson and Viola Davis. The film also received nominations for Haynes’s sensitive screenplay, Edward Lachman’s autumnal cinematography, and the gorgeously old-fashioned score by Elmer Bernstein. One of the film’s producers is Haynes’s longtime collaborator Christine Vachon, one of this year’s Governors Awards winners (with longtime filmmaking partner Pamela Koffler) for her remarkable and groundbreaking career.

Academy Museum film programming generously funded by the Richard Roth Foundation.
